How to keep your BC home cool in the summer.

While you might think that installing AC is the only way to keep your Vancouver home or condo cool this summer, other ways are much simpler and more energy-efficient.

Add Curtains to Your Windows

While this may be obvious, not all curtains and blinds are created equal. Fabrics such as linen and cotton are best for the summer as natural fibers are more lightweight and can block heat. It’s also best to have white or light-coloured curtains or blinds as they will reflect light rather than absorb it.

Open Windows Strategically

If it’s cooler outside than inside, open windows on opposite sides of your home to create a through draft. This will allow air to flow more easily through your home and cool it down faster. When it’s hotter in the afternoon, ensure your windows are closed to keep the cool air in, and hot air out!

Use Fans, But the Right Ones

A good old fashion would help you stay cool in the summer if you don’t have AC. But as you know, there are a lot of not-so-cute fans out there that will take away from your space’s aesthetic. Here are some favourite fans according to interior designers.

Change Lightbulbs

Depending on the type of lighting you have in your house, they may be omitting a lot of unwanted heat. It’s best to switch to LEDs to ensure your home stays cool in the summer while also having your lights last longer.

Avoid High Heat Appliances

When it gets toasty, avoid using appliances that give off a lot of heat. Examples include a dryer, oven and dishwasher. We recommend instead drying your clothes outside, using a toaster or air fryer, and doing the dishes by hand.
