Does Your Vancouver Renovation Require a Permit?

If you’re planning a home renovation, and you’re not sure whether you need a permit or not, you’re not alone. It can be super complicated as this will depend on the scope of your home renovation, your neighbourhood, and how you’re renovating.

In Vancouver, all major constructions and new builds will require a permit. You may also need electrical and gas permits if you are making changes in this area.

To figure out the exact permits you would need for home renovation in Vancouver, start by determining your local government

The second step is understanding the scope of your renovation. More than likely, if you are doing a simple bathroom renovation, you won’t require a permit. On the other hand, if you are starting a full home renovation, or adding a suite, a permit may be in order.

Regardless of how big or small your renovation is, if you or your construction contractor is installing electrical equipment, an electrical installation permit is necessary. For more information on getting this permit, read here.

According to Technical Safety BC, “gas installation permits are required for licensed contractors installing regulated gas equipment or gas systems working with natural and manufactured gas, liquefied petroleum gas, hydrogen, digester gas, landfill gas, or a mixture or dilution of gasses.” This is only available for licenced contractors meaning it’s important you hire a professional for this portion of your renovation.
